By Andrew Barron, ZL3DW
Since its launch in 2016, the Icom IC-7300 radio has been one of the best-selling transceivers in amateur radio. Now the MK2 version brings new standards and specifications to this great radio. As always Andrew Barron, ZL3DW brings his invaluable take on the radio providing exactly what you want - a practical guide that makes getting the most out of this radio.
The original IC-7300 included many features that were previously only available on much more expensive radios and the IC-7300MK2 provides extra features and significant performance improvements. There are improvements in the receiver including RMDR (reciprocal mixing dynamic range) performance and the transmitted phase noise. RMDR is a measurement of the selectivity of the receiver. It tests how well a receiver copes with a large signal just outside the passband you are listening to - in other words, how well your receiver copes when another nearby amateur transmits near your operating frequency. The radio now also includes a CW decoder. Revised components and DC power optimisation have also reduced heat generation while the radio is receiving. There was no external monitor output on the original IC-7300 but the MK2 includes an HDMI connector that includes audio output. The 4.3-inch touchscreen has been upgraded from a TFT LCD screen to an IPS (in-plane switching) LCD display for improved colour accuracy, wider viewing angles, higher contrast, and overall sharper visuals, and faster refresh rates. Not surprisingly, Andrew explains all of this and shows how to get these set up and achieve the potential of the radio. The RadioToday books are not simply a rehashed manual but are focused guides to setting up the various operating modes, and in this book the section on setting up the PC software digital mode program for FT8 will be amongst the first turned to by many. The book certainly doesn't stop there either as there are also sections on troubleshooting and much more.
The Icom IC-7300MK2 is a great radio and, if you want to get the most out of it, the Radio Today guide to the Icom IC-7300MK2 provides invaluable reading and illuminating insight for every owner or potential purchaser.
