By Andrew Barron, ZL3DW
The Radio Today Guides by Andrew Barron, ZL3DW are extremely well regarded, and this book is no exception as it covers for the configuration and operation of the fabulous FlexRadio FLEX-8000 series transceivers and much more.
Not only does this book cover the FLEX-8000 series but it also includes the FLEX-6000 radios because they are very similar and they use the same SmartSDR software. You will also find coverage of the SmartSDR on the Maestro and M model radios, SmartSDR for Windows, and SmartSDR for Mac. Andrew also discusses the differences between the 6000 and 8000 transceivers and the differences between the 'M' and the black front panel versions. The book includes the set up for two operators sharing a radio using multiFLEX and remote operation using SmartLink, as well as FR Stack, SmartControl, Slice Master, DAX, and SmartSDR CAT.
As always, Radio Today Guide to the FLEX-8000 series is not intended to replace the FlexRadio User Guides and their series of excellent videos. It instead attempts to consolidate the information while taking a functional approach. It is a 'how-to-do-it' book. For example, it describes how to set up the transceiver for SSB operation. Then follows that up for CW, FM, RTTY, PSK, and external digital mode software such as FT8. The aim is to explain how to configure and operate the radio to take advantage of its many great features. Andrew explains not only what the control does, but also how and when to use it. Along the way he offers tips on how he configured his own radio. He also explains that SmartSDR does require some initial configuration, especially if you want to use external digital mode software such as WSJT-X for FT8, fldigi, MixW, or CW Skimmer. SmartSDR CAT is much easier to configure than CAT or CI-V on many other radios. The DAX (digital audio exchange) manages the audio to and from your digital mode software. DAX can also output an IQ audio stream to provide a wider audio bandwidth to CW Skimmer, or perhaps external digital voice software. As always there is also much more about the capabilities and set up of these radios.
The FLEX-8000 series are truly exceptional radios and if you are interested in purchasing one, or even already have One, then the Radio Today Guide to the FLEX-8000 provides invaluable reading.
